Welcome to Heartlight

An out of control teen is one who doesn’t appear to have the ability to function within and under the established boundaries and rules of a home. And the resulting behaviors, if allowed to continue, could have dangerous or grave consequences.

Regardless of the reasons behind the behavior, intervention may be necessary, and a course of action must be taken to protect the child from his or her own actions.

When your child is trapped in a downward spiral of rebellion, anger, depression, deceit and self-destruction, you know that help is needed. The problem has escalated beyond your control, and you need a proven program designed specifically to help your son or daughter begin thinking more clearly and responsibly.

If this is where your family is today, then we welcome you to contact us. Admission to the Heartlight residential program is handled year-round through our Admission Director, Melissa Nelson (pictured here). And even if our program is not right for your child, we can steer you in the direction of other programs that we are aware of.

After initial contact with Heartlight, our Admissions Department will either send forms or allow you to download them online. They will contain questions concerning the child's current situation. Unlike typical boarding schools, Heartlight only accepts students who are struggling, require ongoing counseling and guidance, and who need a break away from family or peers. So, our counselors need to get a good handle on the situation before determining if Heartlight may be the right solution.

Following the return of pertinent information, an interview will be scheduled on the Heartlight campus in Hallsville, Texas, which is about two hours east of Dallas. The interview with the parent(s) or guardian(s) and child will last approximately 3 hours, followed by a tour of the campus and introduction to some of the staff. Heartlight has a high ratio of staff to students, almost 40 staff on campus for 48 students.

In emergency situations, and if there is a current opening at Heartlight, the process and placement of the child can often be accomplished very quickly, even immediately following the interview, if our counseling staff discerns that your child will benefit from the Heartlight program.
