Academics at Heartlight Academics is an important component in the life of every resident. Due to behavioral problems, many of our residents are behind in their schoolwork, so we work to help them get caught up, providing positive encouragement, one-to-one teaching and tutoring when necessary. After residents in Heartlight's program have moved up in the Level System and can be trusted to be off site, they are transitioned into the local public high school as a necessary part of of their overall therapy. Hallsville High School, a highly respected 4-A school located three miles from Heartlight, provides opportunities for social interaction in an excellent academic setting while each resident is still working through their personal struggles. Our residential staff takes the students to and from school and intereacts with them after school each day. Our academic staff and in-house teachers remain in close contact with the public school administration and teachers and ensure that all credits earned on the Heartlight campus are given credit. Newer residents and those opting not to attend the local public school, as well as those with ongoing behavioral problems, are schooled on the Heartlight campus utilizing a Texas Tech correspondence curriculum program that is self-paced but administered by our academic staff. Close attention is given to ensure that all time spent in studies at Heartlight or the local public school is transferable back to the resident's home school.
