  • Blame Shifting Teens (7-18-2011)

    PODCAST SCRIPT:

Teens are pretty good at shifting responsibility for their mistakes to others.

Blaming someone else isn’t new.  It started way back in the Garden of Eden. Teens are especially prone to seek “get out of jail free” cards when they’re caught.  After working with thousands of teens, I sometimes think I’ve heard every excuse and deflection of blame there is.  Then I wake up the next day and hear a new one.

When teens try to blame someone else for their own misbehavior, it’s critical to hold them accountable, not only for their misbehavior but for not taking responsibility for it. They need to learn that making false reports and blaming others is a significant breach of trust.
