  • Be A Sounding Board (6-13-2011)

    PODCAST SCRIPT:

The right kind of questions can be a great way to get a closed-lip teen to talk to you.

Encouraging your teen to talk is important because that’s how teens process life. It all starts with good questions, avoiding those that can be answered with either a “Yes” or “No.” And don’t use your questions to blame or corner your teen. Instead, ask open-ended questions having to do with their feelings and impressions, not just the facts.

Take time to let them talk—don’t respond, don’t interrupt, and don’t become judgmental. Avoid offering advice unless it is asked for. Being a good sounding board is perhaps the most important role you’ll ever have in your teenager’s life.
