    PODCAST SCRIPT:

Sometimes parents don’t respond to their teen’s behavior right because they mistake desperation for rebellion.

I was claustrophobic as a kid and one day at the bottom of a pile of football players I went crazy—punching, hitting even biting to get free.  Was I a violent, out of control teen?  No, I was responding to one particular situation.

Sometimes teens resort to punching, hitting and biting their parent’s head off when they feel piled on.  But parents can mistake that for a conscious act of rebellion, making the teen even more desperate and exasperated by punishing them.  If your teen suddenly changes, a good first step is to try to unpile the causes, before you conclude they are being rebellious.
