    PODCAST SCRIPT:

In our Heartlight residential counseling program I meet a lot of frustrated and confused kids who’s parents have used punishment as the only means of communicating their boundaries.

Boundaries are only effective if they are known in advance.  When parents don’t communicate them, their children can feel like they are walking in a mine field, fearful their next step will set off their parents. Out of utter frustration, some go ahead and set off as many “mines” as they can, or they stay away from home as much as possible, or they turn into prolific liars.

Parents who establish and communicate boundaries take away the fear of the unknown and give teens confidence and freedom to make good choices.
