    PODCAST SCRIPT:

I like to have fun, and sometimes I don’t act my age, but I never try to act like I’m a teenager when I’m around teenagers.

Some parents think that mimicking their teen will make them feel more comfortable. They may try to talk or dress just like them.  But I find that it just confuses teens, makes it harder to discipline them, and it inevitably embarrasses them.

Most teenagers want us to look and act our age. They abhor phonies, and they like the idea that they act different from their parents — that makes them unique.  So find some things you can do together, but be yourself.  It’s enough for you to want to spend time with your teen – you don’t need to act just like them.
