  • Parental Fence Mending (12-6-2010)

    PODCAST SCRIPT:

One of my weekend chores at Heartlight is to repair the fences for our horses.

Fences are put up because horses need to know where they can go, and what’s off limits. If not, they’ll wander out onto the highway.

So, if a section breaks, I quickly mend it to keep the horses safe. When it is drooping, I reinforce it with stronger posts.

Boundaries for teenagers are like those fences. They protect the teen until they are mature enough to establish their own personal boundaries. They define where they can travel in life and where they cannot. The parent’s role, then, is to maintain the fences, mending and constantly reinforcing them as needed, to keep the teenager safe.
