  • Don’t Shut Off Conflict (9-10-2010)

    PODCAST SCRIPT:

Parents can frustrate their teen by responding to their concerns without really listening…or by punishing them for saying what is on their mind.

I find that conflict can be good, but it turns disrespectful when one party is not heard. So if your teen has a beef, set up a time to have a good, respectful discussion. Listen and allow them to make their point. If things get out of control, take a time out. Instead of responding with a decision right away, tell them you will give them an answer at a specified time.

Conflict is a precursor to change, so take advantage of the opportunity to allow your teen to have a mature discussion.
