  • Rebellion True or False (10-01-2009)

    TODAY’S SCRIPT:

I’ve learned some surprising things as a result of my years working with troubled teens. One is that bad behavior isn’t always rebellion.

Like many of you, I once thought most unacceptable teen behavior was rebellion, and to be dealt with as such.

But for kids today, I’ve come to learn that often what looks like rebellion is more like immaturity or a desperate response to a loss in the child’s life. The teen may be acting out due to feeling alone, rejected or unheard.

While bad behavior must be dealt with, it is important for parents to look beneath the surface before setting out to encourage a different direction. Dealing with the behavior without addressing and understanding the underlying causes is a recipe for true rebellion.
